Truth Social - The Platform That Never Really Was

Former President and Republican front runner Donald Trump topped the trending list Thursday after making his first post on X in over two years.

Less than two months after acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk reversed the ban on former President Trump’s account in November 2022. The post has received over 300 thousand reposts in less than ten hours.

“This is Trump right after posting his first tweet begging the handful of people on Truth Social not to leave the site now, and site CEO Devin Nunes reposting it hoping he still has a job in a few months while hoping and waiting to be in Trump’s cabinet,” Ron Filipkowski said after sharing an image of the post.

“Wow. Way to bankrupt Truth Social and violate the terms of your release all in one post. Keep it up, stable genius. #TrumpIsGoingToPrison,” Andrew Wortman posted.

The former president skipped the GOP debate Wednesday, releasing an interview with Tucker Carlson on X that reached over 252 million users.

Truth Social made its name as the alternative to Twitter, which had made history for banning a former president from its platform amid January 6 insurrection charges.

Pew Research reports that 2% of adults get their news from Truth Social.

NPR reported that “on Truth Social, users compose "truths" much like tweets on Twitter. The platform is dominated by right-wing and conservative voices, with views that can quickly veer into conspiratorial territory.

Upon its launch, Truth Social was one of the most downloaded free apps in Apple's App Store, but interest has since declined.”

PC Mag reports that “There are two entities behind Truth Social. The first is Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which was formed in February 2021 by Donald Trump. The company also uses the name T Media Tech LLC in some places. As of January 2022, former US Rep. Devin Nunes serves as the organization's CEO.

The other company involved is Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC), a publicly traded SPAC founded by Miami banker Patrick Orlando. The two entities have entered into a merger agreement in order to make TMTG a publicly traded company. However, the combined entity has been under SEC investigation for potentially skirting securities laws.”

The Associated Press reported that “Trump, the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, had been saying for months that he planned to return to the platform at the “right time,” according to a person familiar with his comments who was not authorized to disclose private conversations and spoke on condition of anonymity.”

The AP also reported that Trump’s legal obligation to post on Truth Social ended in June of 2022. Trump’s social media presence will be a hot topic in the coming weeks as the primary election heats up. Will Truth social remain the primary outlet for the candidate, or will it slowly fade into the internet graveyard?
